In January 2013, Professor Stephen Tierney was awarded an ESRC Senior Fellowship to undertake the project ‘The Scottish Independence Referendum: A Democratic Audit’. The project commenced on 1 March 2013 and will run for 12 months.
The project aims to provide a detailed analysis of the Scottish Government’s proposal for independence and a democratic audit of the referendum process designed to offer this option to the Scottish people. The two dimensions are inextricably linked. Constitutional outcomes are shaped by the process that produces them and at the same time the legitimacy of any constitutional initiative is heavily dependent upon the fairness of the process that brings it about.
